A group of over 1,000 medical students from all universities throughout Uganda have Thursday afternoon staged a demonstration at the Ministry of Health demanding an explanation over internship payment.
The students from Uganda Makerere, Mbarara University of Science and Technology, Gulu and Kampala International University led by their president Fauzi Kavuma said a new policy has been orchestrated in which only government- sponsored students will be catered for during their one-year internship period which they say is unfair.
“We are supposed to have started our internship in the different hospitals but up to now we don’t know what next because the Ministry has refused to clear the air on the issue of payments during the period,” said Kavuma.
“We were told that starting this year, no private students will be paid for internship yet our brothers and sisters on government sponsorship are well catered for which is unfair because we do the same work. We demand that all students be paid for the one year they spend on internship in government hospitals.”
The group which stormed the Health Ministry headquarters in Wandegeya demanding to meet the Minister Ruth Aceng and the Permanent Secretary Asuman Lukwago said they could not continue working in hospitals without anything to eat on top of sleeping in corridors yet they do services beneficial to government and the public at large.
The intern students argue that accommodation and food allowances ought to be provided to them because they do most of the work in hospitals as they assist doctors and nurses.
“Interns do 90 percent of the work yet the doctors in the hospitals do almost nothing. Government should start treating us as human beings because many lives of patients depend on our services. We have tried to have dialogues with officials from the ministry but have yielded nothing,” said Joel Mirembe, from Mbarara University.

Uganda Compulsory Service
The students also claimed there is a new policy by the Ministry to force all public sponsored students to work in government health facilities for at least for two years which they say is unfair to them.
Government recently announced plans to recruit over 10,000 health workers in hard-to-reach areas but only 4,000 applied.
They say this forced government to put in place a policy that would require every sponsored student after internship to be employed in a health centre IV in a hard to reach area for at least two years.
“It is not that we don’t want to work in those areas but government needs to improve the standards of living for us in those areas. Government should at least make life in those areas attractive to medics and no one will reject going there,” said Brian Kasagga from Makerere University.
Uganda Healthy system that works for all
“We should have a health system that works for everyone, right from patients to health workers. The moment health workers are not well catered for; don’t expect us to do the same to patients.”
The Commissioner for Health Services in the Health Ministry, Dr Anthony Mbonye however met and spoke to the students, assuring them that their problems are being solved.
“The National Internship Committee will convene tomorrow chaired by myself and discuss issues in regards to your payments. Otherwise all you are hearing are just rumors,” Dr. Mbonye told the students.
“We value your work as interns and we are interested in your services. Government is interested in making sure you are happy and satisfied with your job,” he added.
The media understands that after completion of their 5-year courses at university, the students who are now trained nurses, doctors and surgeons among other medics are mandated to do a one year internship course in government hospitals and health centres in a bid to get certified by government.

ALUTA CONTINUA!April 24, 2017 at 6:35 pm #27277Gen Kayihura should resign from Uganda Police
Gen Kayihura has today presented what he calls criminal gang in Kampala live to the media.
Let me ask is Kayihura a Lawyer who passed law in any University? He has suspects arrested some pending investigations and others have earlier on been charged and only arrested for media show off.
Suspects in Ugandan law are presumed innocent until proved guilty, how then do you brand them guilty on national TV, isn’t this an abuse of human rights?
The best police can do is present a good case to court and make their prosecution’s public that way we shall all see how they have been convicted with evidence and how police is doing its job. But collecting people that have committed a crime before doesn’t mean the are criminal now. We want to see police arresting people in criminal activity or after a crime is committed and with evidence, non of the cases presented gave us that but instead we saw coerced victims told to apologise in front of the media and maybe get away free. All this is so wrong and a show of weakness and ignorance of the law on the part of police.
Kayihura should resign from Uganda Police and do away with tribalism in the Force.
April 29, 2017 at 4:10 pm #27289TESO HUNGER A PUNISHMENT
Three decades ago, Iteso submitted to a militant NRA and my tribesmen lastly said welcome! After a hug of guns (1989-1992). This same regime that our parents accepted to rub shoulders with promised better tomorrow to the semi-nomads who for long had been cattle keepers & farmers. Mind you the reason for the great trek from Ethiopia to Uganda was to enjoy the waters of the Nile and its tributaries.
On arrival, Iteso didn’t have a backup plan of a life without animals but this was involuntary. On ascertain quiet morning,a our parents woke up and realized that the government that had 10 point programme including that of protecting citizens and their property.the leaders then, failed to secure our inherent livestock from daylight robbery.
Now that the herds left for karamoja and to other places we know not. Our people accepted the economics of starting from zero (akoru akanin) using the local hand hoes, you can phrase this simply (from grace to grass). This fine government couldn’t plan better on the future of Iteso after riches? As the trees gave way to charcoal and timber needs of the Middle class. The new found agriculturalists filled Kampala food stores with groundnuts, sweet potatoes, cassava & a few sacks of rice. The planners in the ministry of agriculture, ministry of finance & economics planning cared less to the soils. All they wanted from Teso was grow more food, more cotton but no plan for the future..
Affected by the weather vagaries due to natural and human factors, it’s approximately 10 years since the floods hit Teso land after a long drought of early 2007. The same government planners left the work of planning and only with wish that the ministry of disaster comes to do the kind of work that fire brigade does? to arrive after the damage! Remember the mighty peaceful government has had a long term plan on paper and board rooms for irrigation but all this plans have stayed there.
We need irrigation, irrigate our land and let the abuses and insults stop there that we are weak and always sloshed, if its so count the number of days in a year the government aid feeds the entire Teso populace. If this is not a punishment, then its Alie of lies .when the government has no plan for its citizens then its planning to fail. We can munch & chew our termites, it doesn’t need aTV telecast show! we can die.The truth is the story will remain align in our minds because amazingly not all Iteso are hunger stricken (ejaa lupo ejarete)

April 30, 2017 at 12:06 pm #27304The NRAs for twenty years criminalized civil opposition.
Political parties were only permitted to operate at Headquarters. This weakened civil opposition for descent people like Dons of Makerere University couldn’t risk security brutality. As a result,
the NRAs now lead opposition. People like Lukwago are admirable for their confrontation with NRA.
Civil opposition like Dr Semogereres are getting extinct.
People like Hon Wafula and Olaru Otunu were guerrillas against Amin.
Wafula and Chapaa Karuhanga were active NRA syndicates against Obote. These are NRA and FRONASA cousins. They are therefore not civil.
The NRA having seized State institutions rushed to seize the business arms of the state.
These were State corporations.
They captured them under the cover of privatization. The subsequent stage is therefore the manufacture of an NRA middle class. Its an artificial middle class. Its premised on looting the state and therefore cannot be the prima of economic transformation. You never transform the economy on the foundation of crime. This presents a major contradiction because NRA purports to be the shield of democracy and freedom. Democracy goes with free enterprise. The tragedy nevertheless is that those who are looting society dominate both political and military space in society. They are bribing Churches and cultural institutions to legitimize themselves.
They cant permit an election of the masses who are conscious. That’s why you cant freely hold assemblies in the rural areas. Those who loot the peasants cant be content on being guarded by the conscious children of the unconscious exploited peasants. They therefore use their children and close relatives as their immediate guards read detail.. The outer guards are either the un conscious or conscious children of the exploited peasants. The outer ring that is conscious would eventually throw out this artificial criminal class. All the swag is destroyed with them too. This has been true with Libya, Syria and Iraq.September 6, 2018 at 9:05 am #27522Kadaga should realise the mess she caused to our country
Dear comrades,
We can now clearly see that Uganda is under pure military dictatorship with white washed democracy.
When leaders believe they are invincible, they start to make all sorts of statements. THATS WHAT THE NRM GAVE UGANDANS BY CHANGING AGE LIMIT.
Today Rt. Hon Kadaga should realise the mess she caused to our country when she accepted to be used during TOGIKWATAKO.
Parliament of Uganda lost all its respect when you let the President take over your seat as Speaker and decide what happens in parliament.
You clearly humiliated all your allies and those that had trust in you even when the NRM had abandoned you. Parliament was raided, members of parliament beaten under your watch. Parliament has become a shadow of its own self.Hardly two weeks ago, President Museveni stayed that he can disband the electoral commission.
What form of justice are we still looking for ?You successfully participated in building this life Presidency and that’s how it behaves. So from today just know that we are all like Grasshoppers in the saucepan of the dictator.
Not even yourself Rt hon Kadaga, the dictator will not spare your seat but they will be no one left to fight for you.Every Ugandan can make their contribution, a mere share of this message is good enough.
Your biggest enemy is fear.NOW IS THE TIME

December 26, 2019 at 3:17 pm #27602Florence Nakiwala Kiyingi should get a life
The manner our ministers reason leave behind alot to be desired. Religion is a choice, you dont decide for us and our families whom and when to worship. Where’s the religious freedoms, our families have a right to practice vodooism, okusamila, become atheists, go to church or not. The society has more pressing challenges than non starter predicaments. Thousands of children are on the streets, many go to school barefooted while other wont continue furthering their education on empty stomach and you hear directives sending us back to renaissance ages.
State Minister for Children Affairs Hon. Florence Nakiwala Kiyingi has said next year her ministry will enforce laws against violation of Children’s rights including arresting parents who deny their children the right to faith.
She said parents who leave children at home on Sundays, violate rights of those children. She said the behavior tantamount to child neglect which could lead to severe punishment.
The minister’s comments were part of her Christmas message she delivered today. Nakiwala says children have a right to faith which must be granted by parents.
“If you don’t take your child to Church, it means you have violated their right to faith” she said.
She says that come 2020, her ministry will be more vigilant in enforcement of such rights of children like never before.
Nakiwala said her ministry will also not tolerate cases of child abuse involving parents who allow their children access pornography through their handhelds gadgets. She advised parents to ensure that children access to phones is limited otherwise they may be caught up by the law.
“If you let your phone to the child and the child accesses pornography, and other social media materials that violate the rights of that child, you will be imprisoned” Nakiwala said.
Under the Constitution, children are protected against activities that are harmful to their spiritual, moral or social development.
According to the Children’s Act, child neglect means failure to provide for the basic physical, emotional and developmental needs of a child such as health, education, emotional development, nutrition, shelter and safe living conditions which can cause or have a high probability of causing impairment of a child’s health or physical, mental, spiritual, moral or social development.
December 26, 2019 at 3:23 pm #27603MINISTRY OF DISASTER PREPAREDNESS HAS NEVER BEEN PREPARED FOR ANY DISASTER
The Ministry of disaster preparedness has never been prepared for any disaster. They are always waiting for a 35 days notice that landslide will happen.
This time the disaster happened when all Ministry employees were abroad on vacation.
When the Bududes call they’re told, we are not here. How were we to know that landslide were going to happen.December 26, 2019 at 3:26 pm #27604WE’RE SERIOUSLY WAY BEHIND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
We happened to have spent $740million USD on purchasing only six SU 30-MK2 Russian fighter jets but the kingdom of Morroco did build her own bullet modern train covering 323 km for just USD $2.3 billion only.
This implies that we had capacity to do the same even better by covering this small country with railway networks connecting all major urban centers such as kabale, Mbarara, Masaka, Kampala, Jinja, Tororo to Nimule and return back to kitgum, Moroto and Kasese.
I come to conclude that it’s often the visionary and patriotic leadership that will develop societies. It’s never eloquent speeches or the total number of MPs in the house. We’re here to count the standard of physical infrastructure and today we struggle to appropriately connect even the nearest towns like jinja and masaka.
